REBUILDING THROUGH HEALTHCARE

Liberia’s decimated post-war healthcare system has yielded one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world. Most Liberians do not have access to even the most basic medical treatment. LEAP supports several crucial efforts aimed to remedy this.

LEAP volunteers have performed outreaches into the community to offer basic healthcare assistance to many who can’t afford other healthcare options. More efforts are in the planning phase—we’ll be excited to announce them as we are able!

The recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa has hit Liberia particularly hard—virtually shutting down the whole country, its economy, and education efforts for months, while taking the lives of thousands, and leaving hundreds of orphans. LEAP formed Ebola Response Teams to educate Monrovia communities in Ebola prevention, while supplying basic necessities like rice and water along with critical Ebola-preventing hygiene supplies. These efforts were massively successful in preventing the spread of the disease.

How LEAP supports healthcare initiatives:

  • LEAP volunteers have provided education to aspiring healthcare workers in Liberia. LEAP has also sponsored two nursing students with scholarships.

  • LEAP volunteers have offered basic healthcare assistance to many who have no other access to health care by running one day primary care clinics.

  • Ebola prevention: Liberia was at the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak that occurred from 2014-2016. LEAP formed Ebola Response Teams to educate Liberian communities in Ebola prevention while supplying necessities like rice and water along with critical Ebola preventing hygiene supplies. These efforts were massively successful in preventing the spread of the disease.

  • LEAP continues to plan for and raise funds for a future clinic to serve the basic health needs of the surrounding communities. Land has been purchased for this endeavor.
